Cross Country Team Competes in Condor League Meet

The Earwigs traveled to Thacher School for the first Condor League Meet of the season. The boys' team tied for 5th place against OVS out of seven schools. We had a couple of highlights, Robby Bracker finished in first place for Dunn School. In second place for Dunn, freshman Preston Hughes, followed by Morgan Sinclaire, and in fourth place another freshman Matt Mori. The two freshmen boys are doing fantastic. They have made an impact on the team, they are enthusiastic and motivated to work hard and are not afraid to compete. The two girls on the Dunn team, Audrey Pecot and Emily Hemming, finished the race together and are working very hard to stay healthy and improve their times. Next Condor League Meet is at Cate, on October 12 at 3:00 pm.

Lightening Stops Dunn Football's Opener with Earwigs Ahead 14-0

The Dunn football team departed campus on Friday afternoon for a game in Maricopa. First game jitters were apparent to the coaching staff, but the boys did a great job hiding them from the opposition. The Earwigs put together three long clock-chewing drives during the one half of play, two of which resulted in scores. The game was called shortly after the opening of the second half due to lightening with the score 14-0 in Dunn’s favor.

During the first quarter Dunn drove the ball to the one yard line where Spencer Huttmann punched it in for the first points of the season. Late in the second quarter Dunn drove the ball down the field again, this time to the Indians 25 yard line. Coming out of a timeout Huttmann hit Cody Boal for a 25 yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds left in the half.

Bryce McKibbin had a great game carrying the ball, amassing 77 yards on 22 carries in the first half alone. The lightning spoiled his bid for a truly big statistical night. Freshman Alex Knightley also made a splash scoring a two point conversion and lead blocking for McKibbin on one side of the ball while starting at middle linebacker on the defensive side. Knightley has had a great preseason, and the coaching staff plans on continuing to use him all over the field. Geoff Billock also had a great game at outside linebacker making numerous tackles and pressuring the quarterback on several plays. Patrick Daniel, a first-time varsity starter, came up with a big interception and played well on offence as well.

The Earwigs are entering a bye week during which the coaching staff will focus the varsity on the match up with Hillcrest Christian in two weeks while getting the JV squad ready for their first game vs Thacher at home on October 5^th. The 2011 Girls' Volleyball team is all fired up for the coming season. This year's team features eight returners, including solid sophomore players Andie de Werd and Emma Andersen. Under the excellent leadership of captains Maddie Carroll and Sophia McGee, the team is hoping to have greater success in the league this year after a couple of tough losses last season.

It should be a very exciting season for this young but experienced team!

Baseball Wins 6-1, Plays in Semis on Tuesday

Freshman Ryan Layton pitched six strong innings and the offense took advantage of a couple of errors and a number of hard hits in the second inning that resulted in five runs to win the quarterfinal CIF game. The Earwigs will play again on Tuesday at home.

Baseball Team Takes Second CIF Playoff Game

The Earwigs ventured five hours south to play St. Michael's Prep in the second round of CIF-SS playoffs on Tuesday. After getting off to a slow start, the Earwigs erupted for 6 runs in the fourth inning on three hits and capitalized on four St. Michael's errors. The team tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Earwigs had 13 hits, including three by Jake Eisaguirre and two by Connor McMorrow, Joe Eisaguirre, Cody Boal and Dominic Lawrence. Freshman Ryan Layton recorded the victory, running his win-loss record to 5-0. Ryan came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the third with the score 2-3 and worked out of the jam without giving up a run. The team now plays Hillcrest Christian on Friday in Granada Hills at 3:15pm. If you would like to attend the game, it will be played at Master's College, 21726 Placerita Canyon Rd, Newhall, CA 91321

Baseball Wins Opening CIF Game

The Dunn School baseball team opened the first round of playoffs with a resounding 19-3 victory over visiting Delphi Academy. All 17 Earwig players got into the game and collectively pounded out 20 hits, including two triples by Geoff Billock, two doubles by Connor McMorrow and a double by Joe Eisaguirre. Geoff, Connor and Joe also scored 11 runs. On the mound, Ryan Layton and Jake Harris combined to limit Delphi to seven singles and three runs (two earned), while striking out nine total hitters and walking one. The Earwigs play St. Michael's Prep from Silverado on Tuesday afternoon in an away game at 3:15pm. Coach Dorlarque Records 100th Victory

Aaron Dorlarque, Dunn's baseball coach for the past ten seasons, traveled with his team to Orcutt last Friday and returned with his 100th win in that position. The former Stanford hurler who went on to play professional baseball, brings a thorough knowledge of the game and a great ability to teach a winning attitude. Congratulations to Coach Dorlarque and here's to one hundred more!

The Earwigs wrapped up the regular season with a five-inning 12-1 road victory over Orcutt Academy in Santa Maria on Friday afternoon. Senior Joe Eisaguirre and sophomore Jake Harris both pitched great, combining on a one-hitter, walking two and giving up one run while striking out six. The Earwigs pounded out 12 hits, including doubles by Joe Eisaguirre (two), Jake Eisaguirre and Cody Boal. Jake Eisaguirre also drove in four runs, while Joe, Jay Gould and Dominic Lawrence each drove in two Earwig runners. The Earwigs finish the season 14-3 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the Condor League. The team is on an 11-game winning streak, ranked #5 in CIF-SS Division VII and Maxpreps and will host a first-round playoff game on Friday, May 20th at 3:15pm.

Boys' Tennis Wins First CIF Match

Dunn Boys' Tennis won its first round of the Division IV CIF playoffs against Templeton High School by a score of 11-7. Templeton finished its regular season as the Los Padres #2 team with a regular season record of 14-4, finishing right behind Santa Ynez High School. The Dunn boys played an excellent match and dominated the doubles by winning 6 out of the 9 matches. The doubles team of Jacob Bronfman and Ohm Sirimongkolkasem were the highlight of the day by winning all three of their sets (6-0,6-2,6-1). The singles were carried by #1 Allen Lee winning all three of his sets (6-1,6-1,6-1). Dunn will wait to find out its next opponent and will play on Friday.

Young iPhone App Creator - Flying Fatress Earns His Allowances

Most high school students are content loading iPhone apps designed by other people. High school freshman Connor Rodriguez wasn’t, however, which is why he created an iPhone app that’s now for sale through the iTunes store.

Available for just $.99, Flying Fatress is a simple but highly addictive mobile game. The objective is to bounce the scantily clad Fatress on beach chairs for sodas and donuts, but be careful because vegetables will ruin her snack.

Rodriguez, 15, is in his first year at the Dunn School in Los Olivos, Calif., having graduated from Aspen Country Day School in Aspen, Colo., last year. He taught himself how to make iPhone apps for Apple using a textbook and YouTube training videos. Much trial and error was involved in creating the mobile game, but it was worth it in the end for him, particularly because of the satisfaction he got when Apple agreed his iPhone app was worthy of a price tag instead of making it free like so many thousands of others. Making some extra money has been a nice result, too, of course.

“I like making iPhone apps and enjoyed doing something that customers would like,” Rodriguez said. “It’s something I could create on my own terms. Flying Fatress is a funny mobile game and it was an original idea, which was important to me.”

A Flying Fatress update, Version 1.2 of this addicting mobile game, is pending, and Rodriguez hopes to expand his burgeoning empire by making apps for others in addition to himself. Of course, this is all done in his spare time when he’s not hitting the books.

Flipping burgers or diving for digital donuts to make some extra dough? Which would you rather do if you were in high school, work at a mindless job or develop iPhone apps? The choice is clear. Could this be the future of teen employment?

"The #5 ranked Dunn Earwigs hosted the Ojai Spuds in a non-league contest in Los Olivos on Saturday morning. Down 4-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Earwigs put together four hits and capitalized on a hit batsman and an error to plate five runs and took a 9-5 lead. Ojai managed two runs in the top of the seventh before freshman pitcher Ryan Layton entered the game and picked a runner off first base to stop the bases loaded threat and record his first save. Every player on Dunn got into the game and five pitchers split up seven innings of work. Senior Connor McMorrow had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs for the Earwigs. Junior Geoff Billock and freshman Dominic Lawrence each had two hits for Dunn which hosts Valley Christian Academy of Santa Maria on Tuesday at 4pm. Dunn is now 11-3 overall and 9-0 in the Condor League."

Dunn Wins Condor Tennis Doubles Championship; Takes Second Place Too

The Condor League Doubles Championship was held today at Cate School. Cate, Dunn, and Laguna Blanca each sent two teams to play a round robin championship. The Dunn doubles team of Allen Lee/Ryan Yau won the championship by beating both Cate teams and Laguna Blanca teams to go 4-0 for the day. The Dunn doubles team of WooJin Choi/Brandon Yau tied for second place with the Cate team of Grant Redmond/Chris Liu with records of 3-1. The tie-breaker was determined by number of games won divided by games played. Dunn won the tie-breaker by winning 24/38 (63%) to Cate's 24/39 (62%). This is the first time that Dunn has won the doubles championship and the first time that two Dunn teams will represent the Condor League in the CIF Doubles Championship.

Girls Lacrosse Ends Strong

Dunn Girls lacrosse traveled to Midland School on Friday the 29th and won, 15-13. Dunn was down one coach, as Head Coach Susie Childs had to step in as the referee due to a scheduling conflict. Christy Davidge took the position as head coach readily. “The five Seniors led the team in good transitions from offense to defense, almost all of them scored a goal. All of our shots are what kept us in the lead throughout the game.”

This game marked an end to the 2011 season, and the team agrees that although they had fewer girls on the team this year, they all improved dramatically throughout the season. The Seniors this year were praised in front of the school assembly on Friday by the rest of the players. The Seniors, Janaya Reid, Julia Jones, Nikole Layton, Mary Essa, and Sazan Pasori, will be missed. Dunn will be looking to a solid Freshmen core. The team finished with an overall record in the Condor League of 3-3. “I think we performed well even though most of our players were new this year,” said Janaya Reid when asked about the overall season. Mary Essa agrees, “I think we had a great season overall. I am going to miss bonding with my team mates. I loved playing ‘hey cow’ with my whole team on the way back from Midland.” The season has come to a close and the coaches are eagerly awaiting next season and hope that new girls will come and try out the sport.

Baseball Team Wins Condor Championship and #1 Seed at CIF

Wednesday, April 27th - The Dunn baseball team traveled to Carpinteria to play Cate in a pivotal Condor League. Both teams entered the game with 6-0 records in the Condor League and Cate entered the game as the #1 ranked Division VII baseball team in the CIF-Southern Section with an 11-0 overall record. Senior Joe Eisaguirre shut down the Cate offense for the first four innings, helped by outstanding defense from third baseman Corbin Meyer who recorded six outs on the day. The Earwigs built a 6-0 lead on offense before Cate mounted a comeback in the fifth inning. The inning saw several infield hits and two walks and Cate had clawed its way back into the game 6-4. After the Earwigs put another run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 7-4, Cate scored two more runs to make the score 7-6 going into the final frame. Freshman Ryan Layton gave up a single in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but struck out the final two Cate hitters to preserve the victory and hand Cate their first lost and give Dunn the Condor League lead in front of many nervous Dunn parents.

Saturday, April 30th - After a close 7-6 victory earlier in the week, the Earwigs hosted the Rams in another key Condor League game. A victory would give Dunn the outright Condor League championship and a Cate win would mean sharing the title. In front of about 100 alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends of Dunn School, the Earwig baseball team put on a show. Freshman left-handed pitcher Ryan Layton pitched five shutout innings and the offense led by freshman Bryce McKibbin (2 hits and a stolen base) built a 6-0 lead through the first five innings. Freshmen Jake Eisaguirre brought the crowd to its feet with an amazing diving catch to record the third out in the fifth inning with the bases loaded. However, Cate battled back in the top of the sixth inning with five runs on two hits, three walks, a hit batsman and an error. With the bases loaded and no outs, McKibbin was able to get out of the jam with the Earwigs still on top 6-5. In the top of the seventh inning, the lead runner got on for Cate School. With one out and the tying runner on second base, Cody Boal made one of the top defensive plays of the year by going back on a deep fly ball that he caught just in front of the center field wall for the second out of the inning. After a walk and a passed ball, Cate had runners on second and third base. After many foul balls, McKibbin was able to get Cate's batter to fly out to Joe Eisaguirre at shortstop to end the game. The victory assured Dunn the outright Condor League championship with an 8-0 Condor League record and an overall record of 9-3. On May 2, the new CIF-SS polls came out and Dunn is now ranked #5 in Division VII, while Cate dropped to #8. Dunn is assured a #1 seed and a home game for playoffs which are scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 19th.

Golf Team on Par for Second Undefeated Season

Today's victory for the Dunn Golf Team over a very competitive Santa Ynez High School by six strokes continues an undefeated season for a second year in a row. Jonny Hogan led all players by carding a 37 in the nine hole competition. Aaron Hou, Michael Tseng, Tashi Richter Valdes, Arden Chan, and Trevor Whelan made up the rest of the Dunn team who labeled Chan the hero of the day as he recorded one of his best scores of the past two seasons. The defending Condor League Champions close out the season with a home match against Cate on May 4th.

The boys beat Laguna Blanca 10-8 in a grueling three hour match. The match was tied 3-3 after the first round, 7-5 after the second round, but in the third round the experience of our junior and senior singles players helped Dunn to secure a second seed in the Condor League. The hero of the day was Dunn's #3 singles player Ryan Yau with his 6-3 victory against Laguna's #1 singles player Troy Ritter. Ryan had lost to Laguna's #2 singles player the set before but Ryan was able to outlast Troy for a tremendous win. The other singles players, Allen Lee and Kyle Nelson, continued their season long dominating performance by winning all three of their sets. Dunn will play Cate to decide who will be the Condor League Champion this Friday. Cate beat Dunn 4-14 last week but Dunn is hoping to avenge the loss.

Dunn Boys' Tennis won yet another game today against their out of conference opponent Bishop Diego 13 - 5. All three singles players Allen Lee, Kyle Nelson, and Ryan Yau swept all of their matches. The doubles team of Joseph Cho and Ohm Sirimongkolkasem, The number three doubles team for Dunn continues to improve and in doing so won 2 out of their 3 sets. This goes to show how truly deep and determined this team is. The Dunn boys varsity tennis now stands at an overall record of 7-0, and a league record of 2-0. " This match has been the closest scoring match since Laguna at the beginning of the season, but the whole team feels confident that we will be able to keep up this winning streak throughout the rest of the season," Jack Lee states." If we win against Thacher and Cate this week we will have a guarantied spot in the CIF playoffs."

The Dunn baseball team hosted Thacher on Saturday and earned an 11-1 Condor League Victory. Freshman Ryan Layton started his first game as an Earwig and pitched a five-inning complete game, yielding three hits, three walks, while striking out eight. Joe Eisaguirre had three hits on the day, including two home runs. The first home run was a deep solo shot that put the Earwigs up 1-0 in the first inning. Joe's second home run came with two runners on in the third inning and put the Earwigs up 4-0. Freshman Bryce McKibbin also had three singles on the day, scored two runs and drove in one run. The Earwigs are now 5-3 overall and 5-0 in the Condor League."

Dunn Boys' Tennis won its first match back from their spring vacation today over out of conference opponent Bishop Diego by a score of 13 - 5. All three singles players (Allen Lee, Kyle Nelson, and Ryan Yau) swept their matches to carry the team to victory. The doubles team of Joseph Cho and Ohm Sirimongkolkasem continue to show improvement and that they are turning into one of the stronger doubles team in Division IV as they won 2 out of their 3 sets. Dunn faces conference foes Thacher and Cate this week.

Golf Team Leaves Cate in the Rough

Dunn traveled to the Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai for a match against Cate School. Dunn won the match by a score of 222 to 277. Dunn was lead by captains Jonny Hogan who and Michael Tseng who with scores of 33 and 41 respectively. The other members of the team who competed were: Corbin Meyer, Tashi Richter-Valdes, Trevor Whelan, and Arden Chan. Dunn’s record is now 4 and 0.

Baseball Team Taking the Condor League by Storm

This season the baseball team has won all of the games in their league. They beat Thacher School on Friday, April 1st in Ojai 16-2. “Senior Joe Eisagurre and freshman Ryan Layton combined to throw a no-hitter, while striking out 15 Toad hitters and walking seven in a six inning contest that was shortened due to the 10-run mercy rule,” wrote coach Dorlarque in his recap of the game. The captains this year are Connor McMorrow, Joe Eisagurre and Corbin Meyer. McMorrow leads the team behind the plate as the primary catcher, Eisagurre is one of the starting pitchers, and Meyer plays multiple positions. Their win against Thacher raised the team’s spirits after losing to North County Christian in the prior game. The team looks forward to playing Thacher again this coming Saturday, April 16th at 2:00pm. McMorrow explained, “It is obvious who worked out over break and who didn’t. But I am not worried, I don’t think the break effected us,” when asked if the weeklong break had any negative effect on the team. The team expects to perform well on Saturday and hopes to come out on top once more.

A group of Dunn School students pose at the Pacaya volcano in Guatemala

A group of Dunn School students did more than just build homes in Central America during their winter break last month.

They learned from the people of Guatemala, among the most impoverished in the Americas, that they are not poor people, as they have hearts to love and lots of generosity.

The 10 high school students who went on the trip are known on the Los Olivos campus as the “Antiqua Ten,” named after a city in the central highlands of Guatemala.

Each of them said the 10-day visit was life-changing and they’d do it again.

Led by Spanish teachers Alejandra Santos and Ulises Castaneda, the students are seniors Stephen Anderson and Brandon Yau; juniors Scott Goodman, Yong Hwan Kim, Samantha Ko, Jaehong Lee, Ohm Sirimongkolkasem, Emma VanSteenwyk and Tiffany Vanichviroon; and sophomore Erielle Webber.

Castaneda’s son Balam Castaneda, a Dunn eighth-grader, also participated.

The students built parts of four homes in the town of San Mateo through the group Constru Casa, which is dedicated to offering basic homes to poor families to improve their living conditions and health.

The Los Olivos Rotary Club donated money to Constru Casa, which requires donors to help build the homes, and a number of local Rotarians also participated.

Alice Berg, Dunn’s head of learning strategies and a Los Olivos Rotary Club member, and her husband Steve were part of the delegation.

More than half of the population in Guatemala lives in poverty, according to Constru Casa, which in English translates to “build a home.”

Of those people, most live in make-shift dwellings made of corn stalk walls, dirt floors, and roofs made of cardboard and plastic or wood and corrugated iron.

Over the course of two weeks from late February to early March, Rotarians and the students built four homes. The Dunn group finished up the second half of one home and left three others half-built to be finished by the next crew.

Each three-room, one-bathroom home is made of 1,200 concrete blocks with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. At least one family member is required to work on building the house, among other requirements that the family must satisfy before getting the home.

Each house costs about $3,600 to build.

Castaneda, one of the teacher-leaders, described the trip as “very rewarding” and life-changing for himself.

“I’ve never been that up close to poverty,” he said. “That really had an impact on me.”

Castaneda said he was proud of each student as he saw their hard work and dedication to the project. They saw the need to do something and did it without complaints or hesitation, he said.

His son, Balam, was “not the same boy who got on the airplane” after they returned home, he said.

Castaneda said he will encourage all Dunn students to travel the world and give back to the communities they visit.

“You need to initiate that,” he said

Students submitted applications for the trip, and they were chosen by a committee, Castaneda said. Each student volunteered and agreed to forfeit his or her vacation, he said.

Only two of the students had any formal Spanish instruction.

Although there may have been a language barrier, Sirimongkolkasem and other students said the kindness and generosity of the Guatemalans needed no translation.

Webber said she was most touched by a visit to a school and the joyful reception from the young students, who sang and danced for them.

The heartfelt welcome made her cry, she said.

“They didn’t know how to repay us,” she said of the many gestures, big and small, of thanks.

Students worked from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for five days. They carried blocks and concrete and used no electric tools.

In their free time, the group went sight-seeing to places that included Pacaya volcano, Lake Atitlan and Mayan ruins.

The students agreed they would go back to Guatemala and would encourage their peers to take a similar humanitarian trip.

Established in 1957, Dunn is a co-ed, college-prep boarding and day school.

My Trip to Guatemala

Guatemala is a small country about two thirds the size of California, population of 13,276,517. It’s mostly mountains. Formerly a Mayan Civilization, it’s capitol is Guatemala City, built near the ruins of Kaminaljuyu. The city of Antigua, where we stayed, was built within ruins, still using the ancient cobblestone streets. Guatemala won its independence from Spain in 1821 and has been through a number of revolutions since then. It only recently had its first free election, in 1945. Natural disasters are common, with the capitol moved multiple times due to earthquakes, volcanic activity, and mudslides. There are about eight Quetzals per American dollar, and about six more colors on a bill.

What we did in Guatemala was build. We dug trenches and chipped holes in cinderblocks. For every foot of finished trenched we managed, an elderly man had dug two. We carried as many cinderblocks as we could down the hill, while a woman walked past us with two cinderblocks on her head, one in her arms, and her child on her back. I can’t put into words how much respect I had for these people.

One Quetzal can buy an entire sliced mango, complete with salt and chili powder. Thirty Quetzals, after much bargaining, can buy a handmade flute off of a street vendor. But what we gained in Guatemala was not something you could buy, not even something you can price. What we learned in Guatemala was more than how to drive a hard bargain or walk on cobblestone streets. What we learned is not something you can put into textbooks or even put into words. But mostly, what we created in Guatemala was not just a concrete house, it was more than that. It was more than a roof and some walls; it was more than a home for people who had never had one before. Even though many people in the hillside town of San Mateo can’t get running water, even though many cannot eat, Senora Martin told us, they are not poor people. They have their feet to carry them, their arms to work, their heads to think, and their hearts to love.

Dunn Girls’ Lacrosse Team Season Off to Promising Start

Dunn Girls’ Lacrosse is expecting another great season. Last year they tied with Cate in the Condor league and moved onto CIF. They are hopeful to do the same or better this year. They have a new goalie, Jayne Pugh, a sophomore who is eager and ready to learn. “I’m excited for the season,” said Pugh, “I’ll just give it my all and hope for the best.”

Senior Captains, Sazan Pasori and Nikole Layton, share Pugh’s excitement. Pasori said, “We have a young team, but I can tell they have made progress already. I can’t wait to play our first league game!” Nikole added, “Yes, we have a majority of new students and we are small in number, but we are all athletic.”

There are many freshmen this season that show great potential to the sport. Co-coach Christie Davidge says, “They all are talented. I can’t wait to see them improve throughout the season.”

The team started off the season with the annual Rose Bowl tournament in Pasadena. They played a total of three games, winning one. “Those schools are much larger than Dunn giving them the ability to pick from a larger group of students. We worked hard in all three games and were pleased with our success in the last game,” explains Mary Essa when asked about the tournament.

The high scorers this season are Areli Diosdado and Mary Essa. Diosdado has scored twenty one goals thus far in the season and hopes to double the number soon. This comes as no surprise due to their performance in past years.

The head coach is Susie Childs. She explains that the team is doing well even with the loss of great players such as Hannah Brown and Jillian Keller, both members of the class of 2010. Childs says “There is strong leadership from the seniors this year and I am hopeful for good fun season.”

The team is off to a great start, they beat Midland 16 to 6. Emma Anderson, a freshman, scored her first goal this season. The coaches were able to substitute the less experienced players in and give them more playing time.

Dunn Baseball Posts Win Against OVS

Dunn won their home baseball game 3-0 against OVS this Saturday. The game was called after 36 minutes due to bad weather conditions, which allowed Dunn to take the win. Sophomore, Jake Harris, started as pitcher for the game. Harris threw a one hitter and Geoff Billok got an RBI double to end the game. Cody Boal said, “Jake did really well as pitcher.” Coach Deguin agreed: “Jake did a great job as pitcher, too bad about the weather, though.”

Boys' Tennis Team Starts Season on a Roll

Last year, the Dunn Boys' Tennis Team had one of their most successful seasons. Beating Thacher for the first time in 15 years, Dunn was ranked in the Top 10 of CIF Division IV for three weeks and made it to the second round of the CIF playoffs before losing to the eventual Division IV champions, Viewpoint. The team has been excited about this season with the return of all current senior players.

Coach Graham believes this team is deep and determined and will be able to perform as well, if not better, than last year. "Ever since I have coached at Dunn,” said Graham, “we have never had a more skilled team in terms of overall talent." He has set high expectations for the team in hopes that both Cate and Thacher will not be able to capture a win from the Earwigs. The team will now be lead by senior captains, Kyle Nelson and Brandon Yau.

The 2011 coaching staff is comprised of Andrew Graham and Ryan Bowden. Coach Bowden brings many years of athletic experience from coaching the football and track programs and will play a valuable role in the conditioning of the team. Due to Mr. Bowden's new tennis conditioning course added during the winter sports season, players like brothers Brandon and Ryan Yao, Ohm Sirimongkolkasem, and Kyle Nelson have been able to amply prepare for their upcoming season. With the season underway, the team could not be happier with the results. The team so far has had no losses and four wins, one of which was garnered against Dunn's out of league rivals, Villanova Prep.

Tetteh, a 2008 graduate who came to Dunn from the Acadeny, was recently drafted by the Sounders. Ms. Sullivan delivered a message from Tetteh to his former coach during morning assembly thanking him and Dunn for all they have done for him, on and off the soccer field.

Dunn Boys' Varsity Tennis had a great victory today against Frontier League's defending conference champion Villanova Prep. Dunn beat Villanova 13-5 behind the play of the doubles team of Ryan Yau/Jack Lee. They swept all three of their sets (6-1,6-0,6-0). Dunn had faced Villanova last year in the first round of the CIF Division IV Championship and Dunn won a close match 10-8. The Dunn boys have shown continual improvement and focus in hopes of reaching the playoffs again this year. Dunn is currently 5-0 and will host Cate School on Wednesday March 23. Cate finished 1st in the Condor League last year whereas Dunn finished 2nd.

Class Visits Martin Luther King Jr. Institute

Last week, Ms. Cook’s Social Movements in American History class traveled to Stanford University to visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute. The purpose of the visit was to allow students to conduct research in the King archives, a collection of thousands of speeches, sermons, letters, and other historic documents by and about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement. After touring the King Institute with Associate Director, Tenisha Armstrong, the students were given an orientation by King Institute research assistants on using the King records database. Aidan Terry, who is researching the influence of celebrities on the civil rights movements, found a letter by Nat King Cole to King, in which Cole offers to hold a benefit concert to help raise money for the movement. Jake Ragen, who is examining the influence of the Cold War on the civil rights movement, found a collection of FBI memos by J. Edgar Hoover expressing concern about the communist presence in the NAACP. (Jake joked that all the most important passages in the memos had been blacked out.) Alex Zheng was excited to find a letter from Martin Luther King, Jr. to Jackie Robinson, in which King told Robinson, ‘‘You have made every Negro in America proud through your baseball prowess and your inﬂexible demand for equal opportunity for all.’’

Following the research session, the class had lunch at Stanford’s Tressider Student Union and then returned for a lecture and discussion with King Institute Director and Professor of History, Clayborne Carson. Dr. Carson talked with the students about King’s influence on social movements around the world and then answered questions about their specific research topics. Janaya Reid, who is interested in the influence of Malcolm X on the residents of Harlem in the 1960s, said Carson’s feedback on her research was very helpful. She and Hayley Harrison - who is comparing the American civil rights movement to the Anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa – both expressed appreciation for Dr. Carson’s willingness to discuss their research topics with them and make recommendations for additional sources. Professor Carson was impressed with the students’ research interests, stating, “These sound like graduate student topics.”

Ms. Cook’s students will continue their research over the next few weeks in preparation for writing a final research paper that will serve as the capstone for the course.

Girls' Basketball Suffers Loss

The Girls’ Basketball team travelled to Thacher on Saturday, but unfortunately suffered a 53-10 defeat, their worst loss of the season. Needless to say, all of the team members were frustrated with their performance. Senior captain, Nikole Layton, didn’t have much to say on the subject; however, when pressed, she pointed to freshman Alex Jones as the player who had the best game. With eight points, Alex made the most baskets for the Earwigs and is a player to look forward to in the coming years. The girls’ next game is away on Wednesday, Feb. 2^nd against Laguna Blanca.

Coaches Haig and Haig Waste No Time in Girls’ Soccer

Dunn’s Girls’ Soccer team began the season with new names on the roster, but their strong play so far reminds observers of successful teams of the past. So far the girls have a record of 3-3. The beginning of the season started with a lot of conditioning drills. Coaches Barbara Haig and Willy Haig are having the girls run drill after drill. The coaches are as physically active as the girls and can often be seen running while calling out “run for your life” or “if you want to do it in a game you have to do it on this field”!

The girls’ soccer team won their first two games of the year against Orcutt. The team won their second game against Orcutt on January 10th winning by a score of 4-1. Janaya Reid, a key player, scored a goal and commented that the team felt confident throughout the game, and especially in the first quarter where they were winning by a score of 2-0. Areli Diosdado, a Junior, compared this year’s team to last year’s when she commented, “we don’t have as many players, but we’re more experienced.” The coaches are not one bit intimated by the number of fewer players; Coach Willy Haig said most of the girls are “keen and experienced when the key to soccer is experience”.

Coach Barbara Haig said “We have a smaller pool of players this season. This, of course, makes games tough since we have fewer substitutes that can be used in high-pressure Condor League competitions or when injuries happen. The more experienced players on the team are showing great leadership and are working tremendously hard in training as well as in games to try to compensate for the team's short-comings. At this point in the season, our record is about the same as this time last year: 3 and 3 with no ties”.

Last season the team was also extremely successful where they ended up qualifying for California Interscholastic Federation. The team decided not to go since they only had about 13 players. The most memorable game last year was against Thatcher, with Dunn defeating them for the first time in 10 years. Other achievements included the winning of the Munger Cup against Midland.

This year however they were defeated by Thatcher, but remain an enthusiastic group of people who seem to constantly be cheering and pushing themselves for a successful season. Junior Maddie Sexton, a sweeper on the team said she is “looking forward to the rest of the season”. Georgia Arnautou, a Freshman, said “I am confident that my skills will improve over the year”. While still early in the season, Coach Willy Haig says “it looks good like a team with experienced players, who show promise in the future!” Their next game is away this Saturday against San Luis Obispo.

Coach Fox Discusses Girls’ Basketball at Season’s Halfway Point

Girls’ Basketball had two games on January 13th and 15th against Laguna Blanca and Thatcher respectively. At the halfway point of the the season, we caught up with Coach Laura Fox and asked where she sees the team.

“I won't lie, it's been a rough road,” said Coach Fox. “We keep coming up against these teams that just have so much more height and experience than we do, and it's been really frustrating.” However, “regardless of the score,” Coach Fox told us, “we never give up and we always hustle. I’m not just saying that either.”

The girls lost 23 to 35 against Laguna Blanca, which so far is their best game of the season. The score was very close for the majority of the game and all of the girls showed a lot more intensity than any other game this year, particularly Senior Katey Gillispie. “She out-rebounded everyone on the court and made 90% of her free throws, the best percentage of anyone this season,” said Coach Fox.

Katey said that the other team intimidated her at first, but with some encouragement from Coach Fox, she and the rest of the team fought back with force. Katey relived the moment when she took a bad hit to the face and had to step out. “Mr. Martin, our Athletic Director, was really nice to me; he said ‘I know it’s tough kid, but you gotta buck up and get back in there,’ and it turned out to be one of my best games ever.”

The girls struggled more against Thatcher, ending with a 15 to 42 loss. But Nikole Layton commented again on the increased aggression of the team, as things got pretty heated on the court. Katey Gillispie pointed to Nikole as a key presence on the court. “She was really reminding us of what we had been practicing; she’s great as a point guard.”

“Our last two games against Laguna and Thatcher have shown huge improvement,” Coach Fox continues. “We have started to move beyond basic fundamentals and actually implement an offence that is showing off our instincts as a team.” Coach Fox singles out Nikole Layton, Tiffany V., and Alex Jones as her continuous top players. “Although she’s just a freshmen, Alex is showing a great deal of promise.” But the player that is surprising Coach Fox the most is Janet Yu, showing a “tremendous amount of aggression on defense. She has good instincts for where the ball is going and has an impressive amount of steals.”¬¬ Coach Fox stated that she wants to refine the team’s offense by becoming more physical and work on perfecting the box out technique. “We never want the opponent to get off more than one shot. If we can shut them down on the boards, I think we will be surprised at what a difference it makes.”

The team seems poised to continue improving and, as Coach Fox said, “the girls never give up.”

Dunn Middle School Boys' Volleyball in Championship Round

Yesterday's upset against Jonata put DMS Boys' Volleyball in the championship round. We will playing for the championship tonight against Solvang at 7:00 (location: Jonata gym).

It was an amazing set of 3 games. Jonata won the first game, we won the second game, and the third game went to us with a score of 26-24. The boys played amazingly well. We had lots of loud and spirited fans to add to the excitement.

Dunn Graduate Signs Pro Soccer Contract

UCSB’s Michael Tetteh has signed a Generations adidas contract and will be attending the Major League Soccer Player Combine Friday through Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale Fla.

Tetteh told Presidiosports.com on Tuesday that he signed the contract a couple of days ago and is excited about pursing his dream of becoming a professional soccer player.

Besides Generation adidas signees, the combine includes invited Division 1 collegiate seniors and five non-collegiate players. UCSB defender Michael Boxall is among the college seniors who will be looking to impress MLS coaches and general managers before the league’s SuperDraft on Jan. 13.

The players will play a series of matches while being evaluated by the coaches and GMs.

“We expected it might happen,” UCSB coach Tim Vom Steeg said of Tetteh going pro. “He was on the list last year. It’s great for him and good for our program.”

Tetteh, who is forgoing his senior year at UCSB, is the third player in the program’s history to sign a Generation adidas contract. Eric Avila and Ciaran O’Brien (both in 2007) are the other players who turned pro before their senior seasons. O’Brien, who was a sophomore, was taken by the Colorado Rapids as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2008 MLS Super Draft, while Avila, a junior at the time, went in the second round to FC Dallas.

The Generation adidas contract includes money for players to continue their college education.

A native of Ghana, Tetteh, 22, played as an outside midfielder and a defender for the Gauchos. Although he was bothered by injuries most of this past season, he scored a brilliant left-footed goal in the NCAA Tournament loss at Cal. And he scored it while wearing a bandage around his head to cover a gash he suffered earlier in the game.

He came to the U.S. in 2005 as part of a program with the Tom Vernon’s Right to Dream Academy in Ghana and Dunn School in Los Olivos. He played three years at Dunn before going to UCSB.

“He’s just got to go have a good combine,” Vom Steeg said. “If he has a good combine, he has a chance to be first- for second-round pick.”

Boys’ Varsity Basketball - All Fired Up

The Dunn boys’ varsity basketball team looks as if it will have a good 2010/2011 season. Coaches Ulises Casteneda and Eric Deguin feel that their team, with eight returning players, five of whom are seniors, will play cohesively as a team against top competitors: Cate, Thacher, and Laguna Blanca. This season the coaches are trying to focus on establishing a positive chemistry with the team. The Earwigs will be led by senior, Corbin Meyer. Corbin has been a key player on the varsity team since arriving at Dunn his freshman year. Other seniors on the team are Troy Johnson, Michael Tseng, Jeff Wang, and Alex Zheng, all of whom have been a part of Dunn basketball in previous years. The boys are scheduled to play a pre-season scrimmage against a young Orcutt Academy team on December 2nd . League play begins the following day, December 3rd, against cross town rival, Midland. Both games will begin at 5:30 in the Dunn gym. Take a brief study break, and come out and support the boys in their first games, which will hopefully lead to a very successful season.

Student Blog -- The Lip-Sync Competition

The following blog is by Katey Gillispie. As a new junior at Dunn last year, Katey wrote frequently about her thoughts and activities as she went through the year. By popular request from a number of newly-enrolled students who followed her blogs last year as they were considering attending Dunn, Katey has agreed to continue the blog as her schedule permits.

Nothing shows enthusiasm for school spirit like the majority of the student body cramming themselves into the barn to watch as kids and faculty alike performed lip-sync acts to compete for their D.U.N.N teams! This past weekend as part of a series of events held to engage kids in teambuilding and bonding, the lip-sync was a huge success. Doubled in size from last year, the audience was clutching at their sides from laughter as act after act got up on stage and whipped out extremely entertaining skits. Each act was well rehearsed, and decked out in full costume (including a bright blonde wig for the song “Barbie Girl” and a girl dressed up as Justin Bieber who sang to her friend the hit song “Baby.”) Best of all however, was the impeccable timing of the lip-to-lyric synchronization demonstrated by all the actors. Sitting near the back, by the third song I was standing up on my seat in order to get a clear view over the heads of kids who were standing, dancing and clapping along with the performers!

When the time came for my friend Connor McMorrow and I to perform our skit (the song “Breaking Free” from High School Musical), the theater buzzed almost audibly with energy as I did my best to gulp down butterflies. Ms. Childs, the Dean of Students who ran the event, introduced us as Gabriella and Troy as the red curtain swung open and the music began to play. We mocked the song a bit; dancing around the stage and mimicking (to the best of our ability) the movie’s dance chorography while “singing” our hearts out. The experience was one of complete silliness and joy; just exactly what was needed for everyone involved at the end of a stressful workweek. I love the way Dunn provides us with opportunities to put our hands to work on something creative; as well as something truly FUN! In the end everyone came away gushing about the evening, smiles on everyone’s faces. Without a doubt the enthusiasm and the full turnout show just how tight-knit and awesome this year's student body truly is! I’m thoroughly looking forward to the next D.U.N.N event!

Winter Athletics Underway

The Winter sports season got off to a successful start yesterday as girls' and boys' basketball and soccer teams began practice, joined by the initial activities of climbing & kayaking, surfing, yoga, community service, journalism, and dance. Independent sports are also being pursued by about 15 students. Team competitions begin in early December after students return from Thanksgiving break that begins this Saturday.

Ping Pong Plays Midland

Dunn's undefeated record from last year remains unblemished, not so much because of a win or loss but because team scores were not recorded. The Len Kado Memorial Ping Pong Palace has been much in use throughout the fall and our table tennis stars are eager to take on all comers.

Dunn Girls’ Tennis Ends Season Tomorrow

After a season filled with ups and downs, Dunn girls’ tennis is finally coming to a close. After an away match in Ojai this past Saturday versus Thacher School, Dunn’s final match will be away versus Laguna Blanca.

“Overall, it was a good season,” stated captain Julia Jones, “sure, tough at times, but I think as a whole, we really improved.”

Dunn’s game against Thacher yielded some pleasing results even though it concluded with an unfortunate loss. With Dunn winning six sets, two of the games went to singles players Tiffany Vanichvaroon and two to Danielle Walker; meanwhile, one game went to senior captains and doubles partners Julia Jones and Audrey Volmer, and one to doubles team Katri Morrison-Goulias and Sunita Williams. The game was lengthy and took place on Thacher’s parents weekend. Tomorrow Dunn will be traveling to Laguna to play their final league match. Wish them luck!

Recently, the issue of cyber bullying has sky rocketed across the nation and in the media. Many teens are unaware as to the severe affects name calling and verbal abuse has on another. In an attempt to inform and educate the student body, each dorm recently hosted a residential chat for the underclassmen. This chat included the definition of cyber bullying and its consequences. Students shared stories and ideas along with asking questions. Faculty members explained sexting, and the different scenarios where technology can cause various issues. Girls' Volleyball on Win Streak

With a 3-0 victory against Midland on Wednesday, the Dunn Girls’ Volleyball team extended their win streak to three games, all of them shutouts. Midland didn’t present much of a challenge to Dunn, and Dunn was seen substituting in girls that hadn’t seen the court this year. Emma Anderson, one of the team’s starting outside hitters, began setting in the third game, and performed brilliantly in the role. Katie Shea had another brilliant performance, and although the girls seemed to lack the explosiveness they’ve exhibited throughout the season, they still managed to take apart a weak Midland team. The girls go to Laguna Blanca next Friday to reignite the biggest rivalry of the season.

The small town of Los Olivos, Calif., tucked away in the wine country of the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County, is the home of the prestigious Dunn School. The town has been the setting for films such as “Sideways” and the ever-popular made-for-TV movie “Return to Mayberry.” Former Davy Crockett star Fess Parker owns a hotel there and Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch is just a few miles away. None of this, however, explains why Dunn School's mascot is the Earwig. The earwig is an insect most notable for the forcep-like structure at the end of its abdomen. Also known as a pincher bug, the earwig was named based on an old wives tale that this insect burrowed into people's brains to lay their eggs by crawling through the ear. A member of the Dunn soccer team reportedly took on the Earwig name in the late 1970s, perhaps as a joke. The school later officially adopted the nickname in 1979. The Earwig is officially listed on the Southern Section website as that section's No. 1 most unique nickname.

Girls' Volleyball Falls Short Versus Laguna

The Dunn Girls’ Volleyball team played a tough match against Laguna Blanca on Saturday of Fall Family Weekend, but was swept 3-0, by scores of 13-25, 16-25 and 19-25. As the match progressed, the girls' play improved, as evidenced by the score of each individual game. The girls started the first game out of sync, but found their rhythm coming into the second and third games. JV Coach Irvin Martin said that it was both “really intense and promising” to see the team rise to the occasion and continue to play hard through a losing situation. The next match is this afternoon against Santa Ynez. This will attract both students and faculty, not only because it promises to be a great match, but because the game will play a role in the D-U-N-N Olympics, as each team will try to get as many supporters there as possible.

Big Win on Fall Family Weekend

The Dunn Football team played against Ojai Valley School on Saturday of Dunn Fall Family Weekend, and the Earwigs proved victorious 45-37.

The Earwigs gave passed only eight times in the whole game, utilizing an efficient rushing offense to run up both yardage and the score. Ken Oppenborn, a senior slot back rushed for forty yards and scored the team’s first touchdown. Connor McMorrow, senior starting tailback, also scored a rushing touchdown. Corbin Meyer, senior starting quarterback, engineered three QB sneaks and crossed the goal line a total of three times.

As the Earwigs extended the margin over the Spuds, Coach Martin filled the line up with a number of Junior Varsity players. “We had the opportunity to play our younger guys,” said the coach, “and they performed admirably. The experience should pay off for us in the future.”

Freshman Bryce McKibbin and Ryan Jones, a sophomore wide receiver, both caught long bombs from Meyer in the game and found their way into the end zone.

In front of their parents, the Earwigs played a great game against their Condor League opponent last Saturday. Congratulations to the Earwigs.

The team’s next match is at home versus Thacher on Saturday, October 23rd.

Pumpkin Carving at Dunn Middle School

In the end there were more smiles on the humans than the gords, but overheard descriptions of planned coustumes may change that ratio. How many Lady Gagas do you expect come Halloween night?

Cross Country Running Fast

In recent cross country action, the Earwigs traveled to Midland for their second Condor League meet. Confident and well prepared, the girls and boys had "one of their best races" said coach Santos. Competing with Thacher, Midland,Cate,Ojai Valley, and Laguna, the number one girl runner for the Earwigs Senior Nikole Layton ran the course in 22:25 coming in 19th out of 30 total. For the boys, Niran Figueroa placed 33rd out of 120 runners with a time of 19:35.

This strong streak continued into the friendly meet against Midland at Dunn. Coach Santos stated "this was a successful friendly meet." Similar to the Condor League meet, Nikole Layton ran a 22:30 race placing 2nd out of 11 runners. For the boys, Figueroa and Danny Cullington ran a successful race. Figueroa placed 6th out of 29 and Cullington was close behind in 8th place. Figueroa ran in 19:24 while Cullington ran 20:25. "My time improved one minute from the first Condor League meet to the second. I'm hoping at Thatcher's Friendly meet I'll be able to get under twenty-two minutes" says Captain Layton. The running Earwigs have another meet Wednesday the 27th at Thacher.

Fall Family Weekend

This year's Fall Family Weekend was highlighted by parent/teacher conferences, a picnic featuring student, faculty, parent, and alumni musicians, mini classes for parents, a college advice panel with representatives from the UC univerisites, Whittier, and Skidmore, international cuisine prepared and served by members of the multi-cultural club, and a number of athletic competitions. Forget about the first game mistakes that plagued the Dunn Football team last weekend, the Earwigs really gave it all and pulled out a win on this past Saturday against Maricopa. The team fought until the last minute, the defense scored a two-points safety to surge into the lead; the game ended in a 22-20 victory for the Earwigs.

Dunn Football has played Maricopa every year for the past four years, and the team has always been a strong and friendly competitor. “In these four years, we lost to them on their field and won the other two games at home; I guess this year is our turn,” said Coach Martin. Nevertheless, Dunn Football also made history in this game. This is the first time ever for the Earwigs to succeed a fourth quarter comeback, “we knew we were in the ball game,” said Martin.

The game started when Ken Oppenborn, a senior defensive end, picked up a fumble against Maricopa. The team started weak on offense, but played strong on defense; Dunn caused two turnovers against Maricopa in the first quarter, including an interception from Jonny Hogan. Compared to last weekend, the Earwigs defense has grown in a quick beat.

The Earwigs fired up their offensive attack in the second quarter; Spencer Huttmann, a junior tight end caught a 20-yard toss from Quarterback Corbin Meyer and scored their first touchdown. In the third quarter, Hogan recovered the ball after Meyer ran for 40 yards and then fumbled on the one-yard line. Hogan’s recovery was good for the Earwigs’ second touchdown. Later, Meyer ran a “QB Sneak” and made their third touchdown three minutes before the clock stopped, leaving the score at 20-20. The most exciting part of the game happened when Connor McMorrow tackled a Maricopa running back and made two points safety to win the game.

In this second game, Dunn’s young players again performed tremendously well. Freshman Bryce McKibbin substituted for McMorrow at the tail back position on the second half, and McKibbin was able to run through gaps and made big plays for the team. Another freshman Jake Eisaguirre started the game as stationary guard; Eisaguirre not only helped the Dunn offense but also played a crucial role on defense.

Maybe the loss from last week made the team fight harder in this game. The crowd and all team members were the big factor to cause this first win. Cheers came out from everywhere, and it indeed bolstered the team confidence and encouraged them to stay strong on the field. Great game for the Dunn Earwigs!

Girls’ Tennis Remains Unbeaten with Win over Carpinteria

Yesterday, September 22^nd, Dunn girls’ tennis ventured to Carpinteria to play in their second league match. Initially, the team was skeptical, not having played Carpinteria before, they anticipated a loss, little did they know what the outcome would be three and a-half hours later.

The team struggled in the beginning as all three doubles teams were well matched. Following a number of substitutions, the Earwigs were able to pull out a lead. Singles players Danielle Walker (sophomore), Tiffany Vanichvaroon (junior), and Hayley Harrison (senior), stayed strong through tense and long matches. Senior Ashley Song, and senior captain Audrey Volmer, played at number one doubles winning two of their three matches. Meanwhile at number two doubles, senior captain Julia Jones, and new sophomore Sunita Williams, won one of their two matches.

After starting at number two doubles along with Katri Morrison-Goulias (freshman), new freshman Danielle McNally was substituted into number three singles where she won her match 6-0. Head coach Beth Brownson exclaimed, “She did so great! I really look forward to putting her in at number three singles. I think she’ll continue to play singles instead of doubles if she keeps playing like she did.” In a tie-breaking final match, junior Tiffany Vanichvaroon pulled out a win at 6-1. The team’s final score was 10-8. Dunn girls’ tennis now goes undefeated, and will be playing another match at home this Saturday against Besant Hill at 2pm. Come out and support!

Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Wins Again

Behind Andie de Werd’s 12 aces and Maddie Carroll’s 9 kills, the Dunn volleyball team rebounded from a harsh loss to Mission Prep and defeated Carpinteria in a roller coaster 3-1 victory.

Dunn started off hot, with de Werd acing four in a row to open up game one, and never looked back, dominating Carp 25-8 in the first game. Emma Anderson also aced the Warriors 3 times in the first game, and Maddie Carroll got the only kill for Dunn in the first game.

However, without the hot start that led to a 4-0 lead in game one, the second game proved a bit more challenging for Dunn, and despite Maddie Carroll’s three kills and an ace, Dunn fell to Carp 22-25.

Both Carroll and de Werd took matters into their own hands in game four, with Carroll recording 4 dominant kills, and de Werd aced the Warriors 3 times with Emma Anderson finishing the game with an untouched kill right down the middle.

Once, Dunn gained the lead, it was vital to put away the match in the 4th game to prevent a frantic, “winner take all” 5th game wouldn’t let down. They struggled to put away the Warriors, blowing a 5 point lead to go down 22-21, but once again, de Werd’s serving proved vital to helping Dunn secure the victory in the 4th and lock up the match.

After the game, setter Sophia McGee was proud of her team and said, “Carp was a great team, but we communicated well, and we kept aggressive. We just played a great game.”

Earwigs Pinch the Lions

On Saturday, September 18th, Dunn Girls’ Volleyball traveled to Westmont College to play Providence High School. Initially the team felt intimidated, unaware of how well they played. However these fears were unwarranted. In the beginning of the game, the Earwigs established their authority with the help of Sophie McGee’s strong serves. The first game was a true battle of equals throughout, with Dunn getting the better of the Lions by 25-23.

In the second game, the Earwigs continued with powerful serves and Senior Katie Shea assisted with multiple kills. Several players had good runs of serves maintaining the lead over the Lions. Winning 25-11, the girls overcame their nerves and slowly gained confidence to ensure their victory. In the last game the team finally got their rhythm winning again 25-15 defeating the Lions in three consecutive games. “It felt really good” said coach Judyki “at first I wasn't sure what to expect when missing two key players Emma Anderson the setter, and Maddie Carrol a major voice on the court. Initially there were many unknowns but the teamed performed well and everybody stepped up." Coach Norris followed with “everyone got excited and stepped up, it was awesome!"

The Earwigs finished the game with eighteen aces.

Girls’ Volleyball Victorious over Orcutt

With a dominant performance against Orcutt, the girls’ volleyball team started its season off with a win on the road. Katie Shea led the charge against the Spartans with three aces in the first game alone and a winning kill in the second game. Cleo Cleary and Sophia McGee also turned in brilliant performances, with both holding ace streaks of at least four, and the Earwigs rolled past Orcutt in three games. Dunn’s point of strength was its serving, as the girls racked up ace after ace, and replicated their performance from last year, in which they took apart the Spartans in three games.

Earwig Football Suffers Loss in Season Opener

This past Saturday, the Earwigs lost their first game at home in a non-league competition against Valley Christian Academy. The game ended in a 33-14 victory for VCA Lions.

On the first play of the game, Connor McMorrow, a senior captain, returned the opening kickoff 20 yards. However, the Dunn offensive line could not get McMorrow to break through VCA’s defensive “wall” in the first half. The VCA’s ground game was a big factor in the Earwig’s loss. Junior halfback, Dustin Taylor, from VCA rushed 121 yards and a touchdown in 23 carries. The Dunn defense is still young, which allowed VCA’s running backs many opportunities to score.

Throughout the game, the two captains McMorrow and Corbin Meyer played well on both defense and offense. Meyer, the first string quarterback rushed 30 yards to the one yard line setting up the team’s first touchdown of the 2010 season. McMorrow played well on defense, leading the team in tackles.

“Our young players gave a wonderful effort in this game,” said Coach Martin. Freshman Bryce Mckibben received a 10 yards toss from Meyer and rushed for another 40 yard run to score Dunn’s second touchdown, and another freshman Jake Eisaguirre played defense during the first quarter and made big tackles showing his potential in this 8-man football game. Jonny Hogan, a junior receiver caught some long bombs from Meyer and gave an outstanding performance in his first game.

Even though Dunn football had to suffer their first lose on their home field, this will remind them to work even harder on daily practices before facing their first league game in two weeks against Laguna Blanca. This game not only presented the team’s great spirit in staying in the game, but it also showed a good potential for Dunn players to improve in future games. “We definitely have lots of space to improve, but I am really happy to see these younger kids stand up for the team,” McMorrow said.

The team’s next match versus Maricopa on Saturday, September 25th, at home.

Nancy Yaki Selected as Art Juror

Dunn's art teacher and professional artist Nancy Yaki has been selected as a juror by the Artists Guild of the Santa Ynez Valley. She will be adjudicating adult art shows in Solvang, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez and Buellton.

Mrs. Yaki is well known in the Valley and far beyond for her work in a wide range of mediums. Never content to repeat herself, Mrs.Yaki morphs easily through media and ideas. Her body of work ranges from photorealistic detail to bold non-representation. Her works have been internationally published on book covers, in calendars, datebooks and greeting cards, and have also been selected to appear in many periodicals including American Artist and Art in America.

"It's an honor to be asked to judge the work of the many outstanding artists who are members of the Guild," said Mrs. Yaki. "I know how important it is for artists to hear from other artists. We're always trying to push ourselves and juried exhibits and feedback are a great way to help achieve that."

The Artists Guild of the Santa Ynez Valley is a non-profit organization open to all artists and supporters of the arts. Its purpose is to encourage artists to grow in artistic ability, to enable them to exhibit their works for sale, and to promote artistic awareness in the community-at-large.

Approximately 120 members support Guild activities and are eligible to show their original fine art in the Guild Room at the Gallery Los Olivos. Guild membership includes both amateur and professional artists, who work in a wide range of media: oil, acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, collage, mixed media, color and B&W photography, photo-based digital art, and fiber art.

Dunn Football Looks for Winning Season

Phil Martin, the Athletic Director of Dunn School, founded the Dunn Football program in the fall of 2005. The team has grown stronger within these five years, and it has gained more and more attention from all Condor League competitors.

Dunn Football will have five home games this season. In the Condor League games, the team finished with a record of 2-2 last season. “Finish with a winning season has become our goal since the first practice of the year,” Martin said. The team will work hard in order to accomplish this goal throughout the whole season.

Heading into its sixth year, the team has graduated some key players last May. However, with many new members joining the team, Dunn football has a bright future. The Earwigs are led by two seniors captains, Corbin Meyer and Connor McMorrow. Meyer, who has been the first string quarterback for the past three years, is likely to lead the team to a successful season. “It has been great, and I really hope we will get a winning record,” said Meyer, who enjoys his high school football career at Dunn greatly and is hoping to continue playing football after high school.

McMorrow, the recipient of the 2010 Tom Holmes’ Football award, will also play an important role in leading this year’s team. Comparing Dunn Football to other Condor League teams, it is still quite young. However, team spirit has always been the strongest advantage of the program. “Last year, the seniors were both cohesive and individual; but, the seniors this year seem more approachable and more involved with every team member,” said Martin, who believes the team spirit this year is very high. Gaining many young players to the team, Coach Martin expects great things from them. “We want these kids to learn the game and love the game,” said Martin. Not only does Coach Martin look forward to seeing new players show their potential, but also Meyer. “I hope they give what all they have got, and work hard for playing time,” Meyer said.

With the experienced seniors and a talented pool of new players, the team is ready to fight and expects to have a winning season. Nevertheless, Dunn Football doesn’t just care about winning, but most importantly is to have fun, and this is the reason why Dunn Football players work so hard every single day. Join our students in wishing our Dunn Football team has a wonderful season, and see you on the field!

Girls' Tennis Sweeps Besant Hill

On the hard courts yesterday, Dunn hosted the girls’ tennis match versus Besant Hill. This is Besant Hills’ first year competing as a girls’ varsity team, and that played to Dunn’s 9-0 advantage. Senior, Hayley Harrison mentioned that even though their opponents brought only six players, their efforts were admirable.

Dunn was able to play their experienced and inexperienced players, resulting in sweeping victories. Number one singles player Danielle Walker pulled out a win in a 6-4 match, while number two singles Tiffany Vanichvaroon won both her matches by 6-4 and 6-2. Dunn's own tennis Willams' sisters, Anita (freshman) and Sunita (sophomore), played at number two doubles and won their matches at 7-6 and 6-0. Freshmen Danielle Walker and Katri Morrison-Goulias played at number one doubles in a tight match scoring 7-6.

Wednesday’s success was “really good,” stated captain Julia Jones, “I was really impressed by our team’s sportsmanship, especially since we outnumbered the opponent, and had the opportunity to act out, or play unfairly, but we didn’t.” The team's next match versus Carpinteria on Wednesday, September 22^nd, at home.

2010-2011 Edition of the Dunn School Academy Opens Tomorrow

Ralph Lowe '70 has taught at Dunn for more than two decades and has been running the Academy for a good part of that time. Below is his introduction to this year's edition:

This marks what I believe is the fifteenth year that the Dunn Upper School as convened as a cabal of academics intent on pushing back the specter of dementia, intellectual torpor, complacency or all three of those scourges. It has been a tumultuous ride and I, for one, hope it continues as such.

The Academy is named after the olive farmer Academus who rented his olive grove not far from the Agora in the village of Athens. His first tenant was a man named Plato and he had a student named Aristotle among others who met in the grove to jumpstart history and name the world. Their symposia (drinking parties) were famous, their midnight ramblings, Diogenes led, all set out from the grove of a farmer was immortalized for his prudence or taste or courage as a landlord much like John Harvard two and one half thousand years later.

We call it the Academy because we meet to ask the “impertinent questions” that fuel debate and stock the shelves of the marketplace of ideas. There are very few rules. We all vote on what we will read. We eat lunch and argue or make jokes. Every edition of the Academy is as different as the members each year. The only expectation is that you try your best to attend and once there try your best to be interesting.

We will meet in Ralph’s classroom (the Conference Room is our usual venue) Friday. Bring your lunch. We can begin work on the architecture of this year’s edition.

New Players Strengthen Girls’ Tennis Team

As the new school year begins to set in, the Dunn Girls’ Tennis season follows. You may see the girls running campus loops, perhaps shagging stray tennis balls in the nearby field, but usually the players are rallying back and forth on the lower campus courts. Under the coaching of Ms. Brownson and Mr. Fox, Dunn Girls’ Tennis is a new team, not only within the Condor League, but also within our local region, playing schools like Carpinteria and Orcutt Charter. “I think we’re going to be a little stronger than last year,” stated head coach, Beth Brownson, “because we’ve got some strong new players. We’re still going to have a struggle with certain teams...but some of our players are going to give them some really good matches.”

Last year, the team was lead by senior captain Vanessa Bell, who has since graduated and therefore left an open spot at number one singles. So, who will be number one singles? “Danielle Walker is our [team’s] very good new sophomore. She’s going to be a real asset to our team, and I can’t wait to see her play her first match,” commented Coach Brownson.

Senior captains Audrey Volmer and Julia Jones look forward to the new season, and Jones states, “Our team has a range of talent, and I look forward to seeing where we end up.” Meanwhile, current senior Hayley Harrison may move into the number one spot at doubles, if she is not playing as number two or three singles. Harrison has been on the team for four years. After a previously postponed game, the girls’ tennis team will be playing Besant Hill’s varsity team in a match on Dunn’s home courts, tomorrow at 2:00pm. The girls’ tennis team at Besant Hill is new to the Condor League and Dunn is ready to start the new season against a new team.

Girls’ Volleyball Team Adds New Talent to Experience

After a somewhat disappointing season in 2009, the girls’ volleyball team may have just what they need this year: experience. As the team looks to improve from last season, it is important to note that it has been under different leadership for the past four years. With incoming freshmen Andie de Werd and Emma Anderson, the team is looking to young talent to add to an already tested team. Returning starters Katie Shea, Maddie Carroll, Sophia McGee, and Jayne Pugh have had another year to mature and hope to make a bigger impact on the girls’ upcoming season.

Shea, the team’s captain and only senior, has high expectations for the new talent. “I think we’re better this year… We have Emma, who will be really beneficial to the team as a setter and Andie, who can pick up nearly anything that’s driven at her.”

Head Coach Nuala Judycki also has hopes for the incoming freshman; however, she recognizes that there is still some room to grow. “It’s going to be hard for Emma to become a setter unless she starts to take on more of a leadership role, and I think with time, she can only get better as she becomes more comfortable with her ability” Judycki said before practice.

Since the departure of Sam Maas (’09), the role of setter has become problematic for the team. However, this year, the team looks to sophomore Sophia McGee provide a much-needed lift. The Earwigs plan to run two setters, with McGee and Anderson splitting the role. Katie Shea, the only player to live through the aforementioned change of coaching, expressed confidence in Judycki, the former boys’ coach. “I think she knows what she is talking about, and she’s definitely leading a young team in the right direction.” Judycki, returning to girls’ volleyball for the first time since 2000 is looking forward to coaching girls and is excited to see them perform. Looking to achieve success similar to that of the 2008 team which featured Kasey Rose(’09), Amber Mirabello(’11), and Sam Maas(’09), Judycki is very confident in this year’s team. “I think [the team] is amazing… I’m hoping we go far.”

"Invisible Children" Visible at Dunn

Hosted by Dunn's Amnesty International Club, representatives of the Invisivle Children organization visited Dunn today to present a film and answer questions about what they do. From their website: "We use the power of media to inspire young people to help end the longest running war in Africa. Our model has proven effective, and hundreds of thousands of people have been called to action through our films and the volunteers that tour them.

We are made up of a tireless staff, hundreds of full time volunteers, and thousands of students and supporters. We are young, we are citizens of the world, we are artists, activists, and entrepreneurs. This fall, we are using our voice to ask President Obama to spearhead efforts to bring peace to Northern Uganda. We are mobilizing a generation to capture the attention of the international community, and make a stand for justice in the wake of genocide."

Girls' Tennis Opens Fall Athletic Season

Dunn Handshake Day

Dunn's Third Annual Handshake Day was a great success. The entire Dunn student body, faculty and staff met on Munger Common and greeted each other with a handshake and/or hug or both. Photos of the Dunn Middle School students and faculty were taken, followed by photos of the Upper School and finally photos of the entire school community, grades 6 - 12. After all hands were shaken, the Class of 2011 formed a gauntlet that students ran through to find ice cream sundaes at the end.

Leadership Lecture Series Begins Thursday, September 9

The Head of School's Leadership Lecture Series begins this year with Dunn graduate Teddy Alemayhu (Cleass of 1991) meeting with the entire school on Thursday, September 9 at 2:50 on the Upper School campus. The public is invited.

Mr. Alemayhu was one of the first students from Africa to graduate from Dunn. Following a successful college career, he founded the organization known as U.S. Doctors for Africa and continues as its CEO. Plans are underway to forge a closer relationship between Dunn and USDFA with the purpose of getting our students involved in the activities of this important group.

Students Arriving Back

While the official start to Academic year 2010-2011 is next Monday, the 30th, students are beginning to arrive back on campus. The Juniors have returned from a very successful and safe outdoor education trip and the Seniors are back on campus today for various meetings, including College Counseling. The class leaves on Sunday for their trip to the wildnerness.

We look forward to welcoming all new students (some 72 of them) on Saturday.

Junior Trip on the Horizon

The Junior Class will return to campus on August 15 and then head for the wilderness. The outdoor education trip promotes the core values of moral courage, emotional wellness, academic excellence, physical readiness, and social responsibility. The trip is considered one of the most significant experiences for students in their four years of outdoor education at Dunn.
